"let nothing dim the light that shines within"
~Maya Angelou

for dear Mom

thank you for always being
the woman who
has encouraged me
more than anyone

to shine my light
to know my strength
to dance, my dance
sing my song

to move between
the earth
and sky
with confidence

we don't always
see eye to eye, yet
there's always
comfort in sharing

we have different tastes
and ways of expressing-(and)
your deep caring
shines through-

reminding me always
how precious and enduring
is my mother's love

All my love,
Kate

listening to the night growing up

listening to night growing up
tearing the curtains, tattered
by years of tacking away
the light and river view

night grows up
when she can face the day
with  accessories, simply schooled
those needless threads spooled

in simple clean A- lines,
she dresses by morning's milky
light pouring in, as vermeer declares
another day of art spilling order

as if drops do pour randomly,
when swept up in unconscious pursuit;
the time we pay attention, they
drizzle in couplets, a balanced river sway

The Artist

"The artist is the confident of nature. Flowers carry on dialogues with him through the graceful bending of their stems and the harmoniously tinted nuances of their blossoms. Every flower has a cordial word which nature directs towards him.

without beginning or ending

Without beginning or ending,

your original wisdom
has been shining forever,
like the sun.
— Padmasambha

loving a story
which neither begins or ends
frees our inner sun

dancing wisdom shines
on all channels, unimpeded
floating down the seine

always casting us
in  golden apricot roll
no escaping this

it has been written
spoken, listened to, and shared
now go and claim it

by the pond we saw

by the pond we saw
a hundred year old turtle
half in, half out, sunning

grandfather turtle
moves imperceptibly
knows all world's wisdom

wearing dried bamboo
our teacher of the pond shows
everything in quiet repose

each friend

Each friend represents a world in us,
a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born.
~ Anais Nin

i love how one friend can feed my hunger for warmed olives
growing on the sandy spanish soil, in summer's bold sun

when another friend can remind me of rows and rows
of fragrant lavender fields, buds of french blue peace

then comes my upbeat head- in- sunshine orange grove
girlfriend who looks for prayers between the citrus and the pith

hey there- roaring red rock passion, uplifting the flat island
woman i am- to heights of canyons grand, with dry swirls

of magical wind, barreling through the canyon floor
morning time allowing us to rise to heights again

cherry blossoms bloom

cherry blossoms bloom
pinker by the day, then fall
like tears, forgotton

wisteria grow
wild clumps-- joys discovered
turning a corner

tiny touches of green
trees new beginnings awaken
our eyes on fire

trees singing by sea
retain their harmonic voice
with the added salt
