swirls of the central fire

burning cedar bark, bursting pine cones
sending smoke to rise out  the teeppee
meshing with turquoise skies

the steady beat of the drums, & bells
punctuate the dancing-- kicking up dirt
cool cowrie shells surround bare ankles

thin leaf like dresses start to stick
against the hot reddened bodies
slick with sweat and blissful smiles

all lay down in a heap
after the last drum roll
ushering in the silence

to last the darkening sky blue
and into black skies stars as opals
then again, the softest cashmere blue

predawn sweeps the canyon floor
rising up from nighttime slumber
stepping once again together

in a circle, donned in lyrical grace,
hearts healed as one purpose pantomimed
central fire is commonly faced
