Staying peaceful in a hostile world.

There are so many things we could focus on to be reminded of darkness, negativity, and hostility. The inverse is also true. There are very few signposts to remind us of lightness, positivity and peacefulness.

My suggestion today is to go within. Whatever one practices,to go into it more deeply and with more passion than ever before. This world needs the meditators, yogis, and peaceful warriors more because the world's natural balance has been upset.
How has the imbalance been created? By wrong thinking, wrong actions. For blaming others, as a cop-out for taking responsibility for their own imbalances.

Go within. The riches of inner peace, joy, and equilibrium are waiting for you to greet them. It doesn't matter what the practice is. The intent to do no harm; to be kind, giving, and compassionate must be our mantra now and always. Not just to balance the world toppling over, but for our own inner peace and karmic destiny.

Begin today!

Autumn Sits

For Zen Mountain Monastery,
In loving memory of Daido.

Autumn sits:
I relate to nothingness
Water flows past my sight,
All heaven quakes.

The leaves turn
Musty smell, orange
Color. Crumbs of
Appendages, waver.

I walk and think
Of nothing, giving way
To something,
Thank starsoul.

Why do birds fly
Unflinching, un-
Questioningly, just fly?
Look up in grace,
Down in humbleness.

We reach for fortunes:
Becoming the riches,
Get sick;so try
To make sense of space.

Eyes closed, deepening,
Foraging, with not a wink.
Great doubt, so
Great awakening!

Stone walls:
Ancient hewn stones
Hold strength, shed joy.

Sunlight glints
And dances through spaces.
The breath between the voice.

Spaces inbetween stones,
The rest inside the song;
Appreciate the form
By knowing formlessness.

WE WAKE

We wake
Neath the same
Morning sky.

We rise
To the same
Hard wood floor.

We dance
To the same tune,
Neath the same moon.

We sing
In the same
Wordless whirling.

We fight
With the same slashes:
Relinquished, forgotten.

We let wild, make tame
In the same style,
The same sweet game.

The holy way
Of the Tao
Tells us why,

Common creations,
Creative exaltations
Are born, bred, and returned

To the earth,
Nourishing the soil,
Blossoms, beings grow

With the fair fertllity
Only Goddess knows.

We wake.

Solo Retreat

The retreat for inner peace was canceled, due to a lack of response. I am sure the busy quality of this holiday time contributed to noone signing up.
I decided upon waking up this morning to have a solo retreat.
This would be beneficial for two reasons. First, it would create the kind of quiet, vibrant, peaceful vibrations, the Center for Natural Healing stands for. Actually the full name for the center is, Tadasan, Center for Natural Healing.
Tadasan means mountain in sanskrit. The pose in yoga, is simply standing up, connecting to the earth below one's feet, and the sky above. It is deceptively more difficult than what it appears to be. I chose Tadasan to be apart of my center's name to resonate the spirit of groundedness and balance in this changing world.
The second reason for my solo retreat is to help balance and raise my energy fields, so I can both inspire and teach others from a place of greater sensitivity, receptivity and compassion. One teaches what one is;one is what one teaches.

This Saturday morning will be spent in solitude:meditation, gentle yoga, a quiet walk in nature, and playing my babygrand piano, with the intent to create more serenity within and without.

May peace, harmony and happiness be enjoyed by all!

Wind and Rain Continue

The intense northeasterly wind coupled with the heavy rain roused me from sleep around 5:30 this morning. I would have loved to have slept longer. My dreams were active and colorful. In one, I jumped from shore, to a moving ship, heading into the gentle waters of the Caribbean. What did I have with me, for this mysterious journey? My cellphone, pocketbook, with some loose change, a single water bottle,
half of a jarlberg sandwich, an apple. What was I going to do?
If I had stayed in dreamland longer, I would have confronted my dream demons, as the Senoi Indians do. From a very early age, children are raised to focus on their dreams. This must allow them a deeper understanding of their unconscious workings, and give them depth and wisdom in their daily waking life.
It is still dark, as I write this. Coffee, my morning friend is by my side. A nice stong organic Ethiopian brew. There is not a speck of a chance that I will return to the warmth and comfort of sleep and dreams. The day has begun. I welcome the next twelve hours. May I create and share, have time for quiet, reflection. Hopefully, this afternoon the rain will stop, and I will meet a friend, to walk in nature.

Have a wondrous day!

Full Moon

Full moon feels bursting
Flowing over with wonder, joy
I drink in her grace.

Full moon, sacred sage:
Illluminating old truths,
Letting them shine brand new.

Full moon, daring flight
As wings transport you from horizon
To sky high, we sigh in unison.

Full moon, simply the soul
Of shining sun, reminding us
As bright stars,we are all one.

Sunshiney Day!

This Tuesday morning woke up prior to sunrise. There was no visible sign that it was going to be clear. Presently, the sun has emerged. The sunshine glazes over the windows and the red brick of the building across the street. Since I do not have eastern or southern exposure, this becomes my "make believe" eastern view. Actually, I gaze out my western window in my galley kitchen. After the sun hits the building across the way, it then cascades sweetly back through my kitchen window, dances through my dining room, and paints lovely red, orange, yellow patterns on the eastern wall behind me.
This beautiful dance happens every day there is a clear sunrise. Each and every time it is a miracle. A time to pause, and look. To move a little slower, and appreciate the wonder of it. This spills into a broader appreciation for all of nature's elegant beauty.
I am grateful for these simple things. I am changed by stopping to notice. Thank you nature, for effortlessly filling me with gratitude. You are my humble teacher.

May nature's beauty give us all an opportunity, to pause, wait, and appreciate the lovely little things, that add up to her vastness:her unstoppable radiance!

Blustery Saturday

It is a lovely blustery, yet bright sunshiney day. For the last weekend in November, quite warm! I went to sleep early last night, so I could wake up at dawn. I love waking up in the quiet, the stillness, and the peacefulness that dawn offers.
Ah, Saturday morning, and everyone in my building is sleeping in, but me!
I get up, light a red apple spice candle, and some celestial incense. My meditation this morning, right around sunrise was a short quiet, mostly unruffled by too many thoughts. Sending loving kindness to all I hold dear, and everyone else too. The Buddha did not discriminate who he sent love and light too;why should I?

A day of balance is before me. Trying to balance connecting with important people, and spending time connecting within. A daily tightrope excercise!
May peace, balance and the beauty of nature be yours today!

Billowing Sheets

Effortlessly,
sheets billow
in the wind.

Non-resistant,
they dry
in grace.

Purpose of Art

"The purpose of art is not the release of a momentary ejection of adrenaline, but is rather the gradual lifelong construction of a state of wonder and serenity."

Quote from Buddha

Hear what is said,
Retain what is important,
Speak what is worthy,

Attach to nothing.

LIGHT BEARERS

Light bearers
Brighten everyone's path.
Non-discriminating,
They spread joy,
Truth, compassion:
Just by breathing,
By merely being.

Soon After Sunrise

Soon after sunrise
Small clusters of clouds
Crowd the horizon
Like peaks of the himalayas.

A community of clouds
Worshipping:
Blesssed Day's
Bright beginning.

Happy Day after Thanksgiving!

Hope everyone had a festive, lovely warm-hearted thanksgiving. Simple celebrations can be wonderful! I am so grateful for my dear family. We celebrated together, just the four of us, at my brother's beautiful home in Eaton's Neck.
The sunset over the harbour was breath-taking. Our feast was healthy delicious, and a rainbow of colors. Warm, peaceful conversation was the theme.
Thank you dear family for being so special. Many more celebrations to look forward to!

TIME TO

Time to meditate
Reflect,
Give thanks.
Another day of loving,
Supported by mother nature
Father sky
Earth which beams
In hymns
Of growing wonder.
Fire, to warm,
Sustain.
Water to cool,
And move.

Sun just went behind
Cumulus cloud.
Bumble bees left
The milkweed
Swirls of green,
As topaz stained-glass
Drift atop
The slow moving
Nissequogue.

The first quarter moon:
Time for water
To be rising
And moon
To be brightening.
Yelp of geese
Era era
Aga aga wa:
A giggle of a call;
They have learned
Not to take themselves
So seriously!

Outside:Whipping around

Outside, whipping around, grey
Inside, warm, and a focusing power
Is beginning to harness itself.

Scent of apples
Aging fruit in basket
Makes her essence known.

Golden/green gourds
Touch oranges, apples
Innocently, by chance.

Sweet guitar strings
Weave through warm wooded oboe
Melody grows, ummm.

Reading random poems outloud
To music, unrehearsed
As mutsu drops to ground.

Dancing to whatever
Music plays, wafts,
My body, god's instrument.

Music evokes angels
Times of trees past,
When we hid in hollows.

Sky's grey begins to brighten:
My day starts to feel richer,
Green candle burns to samba.

Kathryn Lamberg

Moving Rivers

Moving rivers
Still mountains
We revel
In the contradictions,
Yet balance becomes
All that we breathe.

We are the breath
Newly born;
Breathe deep
The prayer of purpose:
Ringing, singing,
Giving us gifts.

Crystal, myrrh, sage,
Sunflower, iris,
Camelia, coriander.
Desert air
So still,
Filled with cacti.

Birds belong
Where they wish
Hovering over home..
We too, can know
When home is home,
Not refuge.

When seeking
Becomes found,
And no longer
Does the search
Need be painful.

Kathryn Lamberg

Stony Brook Harbor

As I turn to go home,
My car pulls me to the left
Drawing me, calling me
To the Stonybrook harbor.

Birds swoop to collect fish
For family's night before
Thanksgiving dinner
By the low tide.

Thick wetted sand
Dimpled by stones, shells;
An eddying thin curve of a stream
Meanders through wetted sand.

Bright sun, in it's last hour
Descends,
While fine misted raindrops
Paint my windshield.

HIGHER POWER

I have always believed in a power higher than my own. I worship god, or goddess,in reverence, through prayer, meditation, and quiet walks in nature. God enters, and I welcome in the energies. I cannot do it by myself. However, my body and mind and spirit are the vehicles for transcending uncertainties.
With doubt is darkness.
With YES! is light bubbling through me, letting me dance and sing fully! I can be in the present(the only truth)and create from a place of perfect love and perfect trust.

Tears are the sacred jewels
Which set me free
Laughter is the innocence
Flowering.
Music melts all division.

I've got my senses
My friends
God
And that's all.
That's alot you may say,
And I will agree.
I'm free,
If I honour me.

I've learned to be more watchful
From the proverbial third eye,
If someone isn't ready
For the Great Journey,
That is fine,
But I have to go.

Time is too precious
What I need to share and teach
Too important in these changing times
To be held back,to wait in safety,
Hoping things will change.

"We can only change ourselves,"
This keeps being demonstrated
In ways spirit would wish that I hear

My dance is with the angels, and
Woods bespeak magic,
Sun creating radiance.

"Many a creation in a day"
Reminding me, the day is true
If these things I promise to do:
To share, to give,
To facilitate healing,
And deep sleep befalls me.

All is good,
As it should be.

May peace whoosh over us all!
Good Night,
Kathryn

What do Massage, Music, Meditation, and Writing have in common?

Massage, music, meditation, and writing clearly have a range of things in common. This has been on my mind for a long time. Since I am intimately involved in these four creative activities, I have had many years to sense what they each need for flourishing.

Quiet, sensitivity, focus, self-awareness, being-in the moment, patience, compassion are human qualitities which are terribly necessary for the success in any of the above creative activities. By simply doing massage, music, meditation, and writing without these gifts, can lead one into a road of chaotic energies, with no direction and little success in the respective fields.

As the practitioner realizes his or her need for being in the moment/quiet/sensitivity/focus/patience/compassion, to achieve great success in the chosen artistic pursuits, each art form becomes more polished. In addition, he or she receives more of the bounties he or she was searching for in the first place.

The "bounties" include, but are not limited to:peace-of-mind, clarity, simple joys, less anxiety, more meaningful communication with others, greater depth in relationships, an increasing appreciation of being alone. Ultimately, and most importantly, one truely learns to love oneself.

May quiet, peace and joy be yours!

Sunshine Returns

This morning I awoke to the rumble-tumble of thunder, and bright flashes of lightening.
I became so awake, decided not to return to the safety and warmth of sleep. Four am, what to do? A little yoga, a little meditation, a little reading, a little window gazing.
Walked outside around 6am to tend to my rock garden. The heavy rain pushed moistened pine needles, leaves, and sand on top of my careful rock design. Clearing the stones, while humming was my morning meditation.
By 11 am the sun shone brilliant. Briskly walked about Port Jeff, utilizing the natural hills, for a super work-out! Feeling pulled to the woods for more walking, away from the wind which is apparent in this sea-side village.
I sense the weekend will be filled with glorious weather, and much needed quiet and "down-time".

MISTY AVALON WALK

The walk began amidst morning mist. We wondered if it would rain harder, or be just a passing drizzle. We both shared that it had rained a bit in the morning of our respective weddings. It then cleared, and the day transformed into clear sunny skies. Perfect for parties and photographs. This was an unspoken agreement NOT to turn back.
We decided to continue our walk on the road which divides Avalon and the Nature Conservancy. In the spring large lush Rhododendron bushes bloom in their full regalia of pinks. But now, these bushes retain their green waxy leaves, hardly showing signs of November.
As we walk, the air remains still and an occasional leaf blows by our sight. The sky, various shades of grey, stoppped it's fine misting. Between our practically non-stop conversation(after-all, we are women, and had not walked , or talked "live" in over a year), observations of various shades of fall leaves, a car passing, my favorite gingerbread house was noted.
Sitting by the pond, we listen to the miniature waterfall, silencing our non-stop chatting.
We gaze at the two lover swans, taking turns, doing nose-dives into the murky grey-green pond.
Regretably, I break the silence to say, "Isn't it funny, that they do this, without thinking about it, or worrying about it. No self-consciousness!" More silence, and we spontaneously stand up to walk. One lonely rose appears on a rosebush. I pick it, giving one petal to my friend. As I give it to her, I realize each and every one is heart shaped! I keep one petal, and toss the other two onto the ground. The bright pink petals show up remarkably on the gravel road.
To myself, I thank my angel guides, for allowing this time to experience this sacred space with another kindred soul.

Simple strength of Solitude

Simple

This was originally written in 1994, entitled, Secret strength of Solitude. I changed the title, in order to stay apart from all of the SECRET buzz that has been shaking up the world these last few years. I agree that it was good advertising, as everyone wishes to be apart of a secret. However, once the secret is out, it is public domain.

To many, the thought of being alone for more than five minutes is scary, impossible, or unheard of. One's spouse, "the kids", TV, Internet, work, housekeeping all seem to take top precedence. For those who seek solitude as a focus for their daily life, they may truely find strength.
This seeking for solitude may be found among artists, musicians, poets,
painters, whose solitude is crucial for creating works of art. However meditators, yogi's, and nature buffs can attest to the peacefulness which is created through their choosing solitude as well.
Take a day off, and visit a local park. Breath in the unique aromas of the
e pine trees, or the salty air at the beach. Immerse yourself in a pink peppermint bubble bath, while chanting, OM SHANTI, the universal chant for peace. Sit quietly at the base of a tree that speaks to you. Feel the natural energies of the tree
coursing up your spine. Lay on your back on a grassy field, and gaze at the stars.

All of the above activites involve JUST YOU. You may just find yourself connecting to a part of yourself long forgotton. Like an old friend, or your favorite book from childhood, embrace it! These are the gifts that have always been present, just tucked away. These gifts are the open door to greater and deeper discoveries of inner peace, and wisdom. A natural, and most important by-product you might discover is a profound and lasting experience of self-love! Drink in your gifts!

Kathryn Lamberg

ors, philosophers, nature buffs seek solitude at times, for solitudes sake.
Those who have solitude foisted upon them can make it either work for the
m, or theycan be victimized by it. An examples include: a woman's husband leaves her, she loses her job, or her spouse dies. The widow can mourn for years, and
focus on the "good old days", or create a plan to change her life radically.
Take a course through adult education, and see where it may go. Be willing NOT to know where it will go;enter the mystery!

Being alone, by oneself, can be a treasure trove~where one may discover all of his or her gifts, and ways to put them to use in the world. In contrast, when
one is with others, and in many diverse activities, he or she may miss, or forget about those gifts. There is so much involvement, connecting to the needs of children, co-workers, spouse.

The gifts are always present, just tucked away. Waiting for the right time to reveal themselves. Some things one could do, to help create conditions for revealing one's gifts include, but are not limited to, the following.
Take a day off.
Take a walk in the park at lunchtime.
Stroll by the seashore, by the full moon's light.
Gaze out the window, at the changing color of the leaves.
Read poetry outloud by candlelight.
Take a hot bubble bath, with a warm cup of comforting herbal tea.
